ALLIANCE FOR GREATER EQUITY SCHOLARSHIP (multiple varying amounts)

The Equity for the Future Scholarship will award multiple, one-time annual scholarships to racially marginalized students who are choosing to pursue a post-secondary degree. Applicants must be accepted into an Associate's, Bachelor's, Masters, or trade/technical school program and be graduating from any high school in Owatonna.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT (8 - $1,000)

Department scholarships are awarded to deserving sons or daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of a veteran who need financial assistance to avail themselves of higher education at the post-secondary level. These scholarships are to be applied only toward the expenses of tuition, books or similar fees, at an accredited institution of higher learning.  Each scholarship will be paid directly to the school, in the amount of $1,000.00 for any one year. Satisfactory progress must be made with grades reported to the Department of Minnesota.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - PAST PRESIDENTS PARLEY HEALTH CARE  ($1,000)

The Past Presidents Parley Health Care Scholarship has been established to assist needy and deserving students or adults to commence or further their education in any phase of the health care field including the entire medical, nursing and dental support fields such as registered nurses, nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, X-ray or other technician, dieticians, physical or other therapist, dental hygienist or dental assistant, etc.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - JUNIOR MEMBER LOYALTY (10 - $2,500)

Candidates for this award shall have been Junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary, held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three consecutive years and be a paid member for the current membership year. Applicant must continue their membership in the American Legion Auxiliary during the scholarship period.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - NON-TRADITIONAL (5 - $2,000)

Applicants must be a current member of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion, must have held membership for the two preceding years, and be a paid member for the current membership year.  Must be a non-traditional student returning to the classroom after some period in which their formal education was interrupted OR a non-traditional student beginning their education at a later point in life.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - SPIRIT OF YOUTH (5 - $5,000)

Candidates for this award shall be/shall have been Junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary, have held membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three consecutive years, and must be a paid member for the current membership year. AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP - CHILDREN OF WARRIORS (15 - $5,000)

Candidates for this award shall be direct descendants of veterans who served in the US Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion:  April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918; and any time after December 7, 1941.  Applicants must be in their senior year of high school.

ANDREW LAWRENCE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (5 - $2,000)

Applicants must be an incoming college freshman, sophomore, junior or senior attending a 4 year college or university. Applicants must have either received their Catholic education at St. Mary’s or St. Isidore’s Catholic schools or through REP in Owatonna or Litomysl and continues to be an active and practicing Catholic. Eligible applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum high school GPA of 2.8.

AUGSBURG FAMILY SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIP (multiple varying amounts)

Augsburg Family Scholars is a new program to narrow the opportunity gap for students with foster care backgrounds starting in Fall 2022.  The program builds on Minnesota's Fostering Independence Higher Education Grant, a state financial aid program that covers tuition, room and board, textbooks, some supplies, and fees at participating institutions, including Augsburg.

This scholarship is available to students who were in the Minnesota foster care system at any point after their 13th birthday, and who are currently younger than 27.

BEATRICE NATZEL AMERICANISM SCHOLARSHIP (1 - $500)
This scholarship is in place to award post-secondary financial assistance to an Owatonna or Medford school district student, in memory of Beatrice Natzel and her endless dedication to educating youth and adults about Americanism.  Applicants must have participated in the V.F. W Voice of Democracy or Young American Patriotic Art programs within the last four years.

Academics, character, financial need and recommendations are emphasized in this award given to a graduating senior planning to attend a two or four-year college or university. An essay is submitted about how Owatonna has contributed to the applicant and what he/she has become and how he/she might wish to give something back to the community in the future.

CLASS OF 1958 SCHOLARSHIP (1 - $1200)

The Class of 1958 would like to share the goodwill they feel toward Owatonna High School and they education they received some 60 years ago by making a scholarship available. They feel it is a privilege to be able to give something back to their alma mater and help a student who is embarking on their own academic journey. The award will alternate annually between a male and female student. In 2024, the scholarship will be awarded to a female student.

This scholarship will go to an OHS graduating female planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university. Must have a 2.0 or higher GPA.

CLIMATE BY DESIGN INTERNATIONAL LEARN TO EARN TOM PETERSON SCHOLARSHIP (25 - $2,000)
Tom Peterson CEO and Founder of Climate by Design International, Inc. (formerly Concepts and Design, Inc.) believes in serving the needs of people (customers, employees, representatives, vendors, community, and others) in order to enhance the quality of their lives, help them reach their potential, and recognize the value with which they were created.

This scholarship is open to students pursuing a post secondary training certificate/degree.  

  • Candidate must be graduating from one of the following:  Owatonna High School, Owatonna Alternative Learning Center (ALC), or Owatonna Adult Basic Education.
  • Candidate must be planning to attend an accredited 2 year post-secondary institution within 50 miles of Owatonna city limits for a training certificate or Associate's Degree in any area.
  • Financial need will be considered.

COMPEER FINANCIAL SCHOLARSHIP (141 - $1,500)
Note:  this is the former AgStar Financial Services Scholarship.  

The Compeer Financial Fund for Rural America is the corporate giving program of Compeer Financial, structured to support Compeer Financial’s mission to enrich agriculture and rural America. Compeer Financial’s Board of Directors has dedicated one percent of annual net earnings to support the Fund’s focus areas of agricultural advocacy and development, agriculture education, cooperative initiatives, rural development and community enrichment; and youth engagement.  High school seniors who have an agriculture or rural background, or plan to major in an agriculture-related field at a college, university or technical college are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.  Recipients are based on academic achievement, agricultural and community organization involvement and essays.

DAR GOOD CITIZEN ANTHONY WAYNE CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP (1 - varying amounts)

The DAR Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.  This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess good citizenship qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, school and communities.

DEB FLEMMING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (1 - $1,000)
 

Deb Wendland Flemming's passion, after her family and friends, was journalism.  She worked as a reporter, copy editor and editor and relished mentoring young journalists.  During her lifetime, she worked at the newspapers in Waseca, Owatonna, Mankato, and Traverse City in Michigan.  At the time of her heath in 2022, she was the news editor of the Steele County Times.  She was a passionate believer in the First Amendment, the public's right to know and open meetings and records.

This scholarship will go to a female individual who plans to major in a field of study related to Journalism.  In addition, this individual should strongly exemplify Deb's beliefs.

DENNIS JOHNSON TRADES SCHOLARSHIP (2 - $500)
(Administered by the 761 Foundation)

Dennis Johnson was a hardworking, self taught man who graduated from Owatonna High School and worked his whole life remodeling houses and selling homes.  He also had rental property.  We started this scholarship to honor the person who works with their hands.  This scholarship is open to students who are planning on going into the trades (building, plumbing, electrical, etc.).

DON TUERK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($6000 available, up to $1000 each)

Don Tuerk was a community-minded Owatonna native and Owatonna Fireman.  Don was a long time and very active Eagles Aerie 1791 member.  He passed away on December 20, 2015.  In keeping with Don's values and the Owatonna Eagles mission, The Owatonna Eagles has established this memorial scholarship in his name to assist students seeking furthering their education in a public service field.

Applicants must be a senior graduating from any public or private high school in Steele County.  Applicants must be planning on attending a two-year community/technical college to prepare for a technical career.

This scholarship asks for a "personal data sheet".  This is like an educational resume.  You can get a copy of one in the Career Center or you can create your own with your accomplishments, extra curricular, awards, jobs, etc. that you have had thus far in your life.

ELKS MOST VALUABLE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP (4- $1,000)

The Most Valuable Student scholarship is available to high school seniors who are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Applications are judged on academics, leadership, service and financial need.

College-bound high school seniors who are the children or grandchildren of dues-paying Elks are welcome to apply. Awards will be given to students furthering their education in the area of business, computer or office support at a two or four-year college. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be pursuing his/her post-secondary education in the field of business.

FEDERATED CHALLENGE SCHOLARSHIP (multiple varying amounts)

Thanks to the generosity of Federated Insurance and the Federated Challenge we are offering scholarships for students to attend part-time or full-time, non-four year education or training program at an accredited Minnesota post-secondary school that focuses on obtaining an apprenticeship, certificate or associate’s degree.  Candidates need to have been mentored by Big Brothers Big Sisters for a minimum of 18 months, or was a High School Big for a minimum of 18 months and is planning to enroll part-time or full-time in a non-four year program at a trade, technical or community college or another accredited Minnesota postsecondary school to obtain an apprenticeship, certificate or associate's degree.

FEDERATED EMPLOYEE CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP (4-$1000)


FECU is offering four $1000 scholarships to Federated Employee Credit Union members. Any individual that is a member of Federated Employees Credit Union attending a college or university, graduate or law school, 2- or 4-year program or community or technical college is eligible.

FULL CIRCLE COUNSELING AND WELLNESS SCHOLARSHIP (1 - $500)
(Administered by the 761 Foundation)

Full Circle Counseling and Wellness, PC offers scholarships to Owatonna Senior High School graduating seniors who are pursuing a 4-year degree in psychology or social work with the intention of pursuing licensure as a psychotherapist. Full Circle Counseling and Wellness, PC provides individual, family and couples therapy in Owatonna to support people pursuing personal and relational growth as well as emotional healing. The need for qualified professionals in this field in southern Minnesota is great. Full Circle Counseling and Wellness, PC hopes to encourage young people interested in helping others be the best they can be to pursue a rewarding career in psychotherapy in southern Minnesota.

GOPHER SPORT/MALCOLM STEPHENSON STUDENT ATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP (2 - $5,000)

Presented to one graduating female and one graduating male student from OHS. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and must have lettered in a varsity sport while at OHS. Emphasis will be placed upon good sportsmanship, behavior and moral character.

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE ALUMNI REFERRAL SCHOLARSHIP (multiple - $1,000 renewable for 4 years for a total of $4,000)

Any student who is planning on attending Gustavus in the Fall should email Joni Churchill, OHS Counseling & Career Office (jchurchill@isd761.org) to let her know of your intentions.  Once she has your name she will try to pair you with a Gustavus graduate who can then refer your name to Gustavus to receive $1,000 (renewable up to 4 years) above and beyond your calculated financial aid package if you choose to attend Gustavus.

HOMETOWN CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP (2 - $1,000 & 2 - $500)

Must be a HomeTown Federal Credit Union member for at least six months from application deadline. Must be a graduating high school senior planning to attend a private or public college, university, community college or technical college.

HORATIO ALGER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS (multiple varying amounts)
The Horatio Alger Association’s scholarship programs are among the few in the nation that specifically focus on identifying young people who, similar to its Members, have overcome exceptional hardships.  Despite facing adversities in their young lives, Horatio Alger Scholars have proven their ability to succeed. 

SENIORS (Class of 2024) would you benefit from a HAA Scholarship? There are "Targeted Scholarships" available.  The Denny Sanford Scholarship is especially attractive to MN students because there are up top ten $10,000 scholarships for students who plan to attend the Univ. of MN Twin Cities. 

Eligibility criteria for Horatio Alger Scholarships include

  • Be enrolled full time as a high school junior or senior (dependent upon scholarship type). 
  • Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.

LITTLE THEATRE OF OWATONNA SARAH FOREMAN SCHOLARSHIP (1 - at least $1000)

This scholarship has been established as a memorial to long-time Little Theatre of Owatonna member Sarah Foreman who died in February 2006. Foreman’s work as a director extended through 30 years with her first work as a director of Matchmaker in 1975. She directed 18 shows and served on the board for 11 years in three separate terms. Foreman served as the Board President from 2002-2005 and was vice president upon her death.  At the time of her death, Sarah had just brought her last directing feat, Music Man, to the local stage. Sarah’s
extensive contributions and dedication to theatre in Owatonna are memorialized in this scholarship.  This scholarship is meant to recognize and support the post-secondary education of a local person whose career plans, studies and/or participation in theatre distinguish him/her. Recipients will be chosen based on theatre involvement (past, present, future) including LTO, two letters of recommendation, academic achievements and educational goals, and college and/or community involvement beyond theatre.

MAGGIE DIXON & JOSEPH CUNDIFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP(1 - $500)

Maggie (Cundiff) Dixon attended Luther College from 1961 to 1964; she went on to MSU and graduated from there in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and she minored in Spanish.  Maggie did her student teaching at Lincoln Elementary School and went on to each second grade at McKinley Elementary School in 1966.  In 1985 Maggie moved back to Owatonna and taught 7 1/2 years in the Title One Program at Washington Elementary and also taught two trimesters of Early Bird Spanish during that time as well.  After retiring Maggie continued to sub within the District for the elementary schools and provided private tutoring.  

Joe (Joseph) Charles Cundiff, Maggie's son, was born October 16, 1973 and died November 28, 2016.  Joe was an elementary student at Jefferson Elementary School in Faribault (Kindergarten through 5th grade) and then attended Owatonna (6th through 12th grade).  Joe graduated in 1992 and joined the Marines that fall.  He was active/inactive for eight years.  Joe married Krissy Thorsrud in 1998 and they have two children, Sophie and Joey. 

Maggie would like to give this scholarship to an OHS student who wants to go into elementary education and help support them in making their dream come true.

VFW 3-DIMENSIONAL PATRIOTIC ART CONTEST SCHOLARSHIP (Several – varying amounts)

Applicant must submit artwork within criteria stated on the application. Recognition will be given to students whose artwork illustrates a patriotic theme with a meaningful message attached that explains their entry. WALLIN EDUCATION PARTNERS (5 – $4,000/year)

Wallin Education Partners is a proven college completion program that includes financial aid and comprehensive support to ensure graduation.  This 4-year program will help current seniors with their college finances (offering up to $16,000 over four years to pay towards college), support - a comprehensive support including an advisor throughout college to help you take advantage of every opportunity available to you, and Access - a network of current and former scholars, internship opportunities, and college-to-career program opportunities.

To Be Eligible...

  • Graduating senior from OHS
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Must attend an accredited, 4-year , public or private (not-for-profit) institution in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, or any Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the nation.

WILLIAM WARNER KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIP (One or more – varying amounts)

Catholic Church members who are sons/daughters of Knights of Columbus or deceased members and who are planning to attend a Catholic college/university will receive preference for this scholarship. This scholarship uses the same application form as the Knights of Columbus Scholarship.

WOMAN'S CLUB OF OWATONNA SCHOLARSHIP (1-$2000)

Open to female graduating seniors from Owatonna High School or surrounding area. Must be above average in academic achievement and planning to attend a two or four year postsecondary school. Must be a positive role model, a good citizen, kind, and determined to meet her goals. Priority given to students with financial need.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIP (varying amounts up to $2,500)

Awarded to participants committed to a professional career or technical program.  These scholarships are provided by our South Central College Campus Foundations and the Workforce Development Scholarship Program.
